The Federal Older Americans Act (OAA) designates legal assistance as a priority service funded under Title III-B. Schuyler County Office for the Aging provides legal counseling through contracted services with a local attorney. Appointments take place at the Schuyler County Office for the Aging each Thursday. Home visits are provided for homebound individuals only. Priority is given to those individuals age 60 and over with the greatest social or economic need or whose cases present crucial issues.
Assistance and referral services are provided for matters such as:
- Advanced Directives (Health Care Proxy, Living Will)
- Collection Issues
- Grandparents Rights
- Landlord / Tenant Disputes, etc.
- Power of Attorney
- Simple Wills
Referrals may be made to Chemung Neighborhood Legal Services or elsewhere as needed, for those cases that cannot be accommodated through the Office for the Aging. Chemung Neighborhood Legal Services offers free legal service to Schuyler County senior citizens age 60 or older.
Schedule an Appointment
To schedule an appointment, call Aimee Churchill, Esq. at (607) 228-7910 and ask for an assigned time slot to speak with the attorney. You will be asked to provide your name, telephone number, and reason for the appointment. Plan to bring any pertinent paperwork with you to the appointment. When creating a will or completing other paperwork, you will need to schedule a follow up appointment to sign the paperwork and have it notarized. Appointments typically run about 15 minutes depending upon the need.
Funding provided for legal services prohibits the Office for the Aging from providing services for fee-generated or criminal cases.
